A few words about your CITROEN XM:

Voted car of the year in 1990, the Citroën XM has one of the longest manufacturing times among vehicles with hydropneumatic suspension. Produced from 1989 to 2000 in more than 330,000 units, the XM is the direct descendant of the CITROEN CX . with however some improvements: V6 engine, It is the very first vehicle to have the hydractive system (question addressed below) on all production models. Initially designed in a petrol version, it will be available in a diesel version and an estate version in 1991.

1995 saw the appearance of the second version of the CITROEN XM. New equipment, new mechanics, new interior and exterior design (including the new grille with the integrated chevrons that you know well). On the DK5ATE and XU10J4RA engines, the new feature was the installation of the "SC/MAC" system (Citroën constant ride height maintenance system), which limited the vehicle's sinking when stationary, with the engine off.

Like many CITROEN before it, the XM will honor the brand at the Presidential Palace (Mitterrand first, then Chirac). Then in June 2000, production will stop. This car has had many fans, but also many detractors who have long criticized its reliability. It will leave room in the range for the Citroen C5 . The XM will also be manufactured in China,

How to distinguish a hydractive XM from a non-hydractive one?

The CITROEN XM has the particularity of being able to be hydractive or non-hydractive. Unlike its sisters, it is not necessarily a question of construction date. Here are several things to know, if you are hesitant about its suspension:

- The 2.5 TD and 3.0 V6 engines are automatically hydractive. No doubt about it if you have one!
- Of course you can count the number of spheres installed on your XM. The non-hydractive ones have 5 or 6 spheres maximum (the one that manages the anti-sagging is an optional sphere). The hydractive ones, for their part, have up to 9 spheres (on the 3.0 V6 for example, you will find a brake accumulator, the 9th sphere).
- The diameter of the hoses that reach the spheres. You will find more details and diagrams on our informative page " what is the hydractive system? ".
